Walgreens to Close Stores in Major Overhaul

Walgreens, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States, is set to close a significant number of underperforming stores across the country. The decision comes after its parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, announced the news in its 2024 third quarter fiscal results.

According to a spokesperson from Walgreens, the company is strategically repositioning its store footprint as about 25% of its current locations are not aligned with the chain’s long-term goals. The spokesperson also mentioned that a program is in place to close a substantial portion of these stores over the next three years.

CEO Tim Wentworth revealed in an interview with CNBC that Walgreens is anticipating weaker consumer spending for the remainder of the year. Additionally, the company has not finalized the exact number of stores that will be closed, as per Wentworth’s comments to the Wall Street Journal.

Currently, Walgreens operates approximately 8,700 stores across 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As part of its strategic review, the company is focusing on enhancing its core business of retail pharmacy. A retail pharmacy action plan is being launched to improve the customer and patient experience across all channels.

Another development mentioned by Wentworth is the reduction of Walgreens’ stake in primary-care provider VillageMD. The company will no longer be the majority owner of VillageMD, indicating a shift in focus towards the core retail pharmacy business.

Despite the store closures, Wentworth assured that efforts will be made to reassign staff members to prevent any significant job losses. The company is committed to ensuring a smooth transition as it works on streamlining its retail footprint.

In conclusion, Walgreens’ decision to close underperforming stores reflects its commitment to adapting to the evolving market landscape and enhancing its retail pharmacy operations. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
