Sony Plans New PlayStation Mobile Platform for Free Games

Sony is delving into the world of free-to-play mobile games with the development of a new platform, as revealed in a recent job listing on PlayStation’s website. The job listing for the position of Mobile Platform Architect indicates that the role will involve designing a platform for creating, publishing, and running free-to-play mobile games. This move comes shortly after Microsoft’s announcement of an upcoming Xbox mobile store set to launch in July.

The listing provides insight into Sony’s plans for mobile gaming, with PlayStation Studios Mobile searching for a seasoned software engineer to lead the design and implementation of the mobile games platform. The individual will collaborate with internal teams to integrate mobile games with existing PlayStation services.

Responsibilities for the role include designing system architecture and backend services for the mobile games platform, staying updated on technical advancements in mobile game development, and having experience in creating APIs and SDKs, as well as knowledge of game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.

While Sony has not officially confirmed its intentions for a platform for free-to-play mobile games, reports suggest that the company has been working on bringing some of its popular PlayStation titles to mobile devices. In a presentation last year, Sony shared that many of its internal studios were focusing on developing mobile games, with mobile games expected to make up a significant portion of its games portfolio in the coming years.

Rival company Microsoft has also made strides in the mobile gaming space, particularly with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King last year. Additionally, Microsoft recently announced plans to launch its Xbox mobile gaming store in July, featuring first-party mobile games such as Candy Crush and Minecraft.

The competition in the mobile gaming market continues to intensify as major players like Sony and Microsoft take steps to expand their presence in the mobile gaming industry. With the growing popularity of mobile gaming, it will be interesting to see how these developments impact the mobile gaming landscape in the future.
