In June 2024, significant results were announced including NEET, JKBOSE 12th, and JKBOSE 10th results. The question arises: is our current examination system evaluating students holistically? Are we leaning towards rote learning rather than higher-order competencies like applying, analyzing, and creating?

The survivorship bias model comes into play, where successful students are glorified while those who underperform are left unacknowledged. This mindset not only creates undue stress but also leads to high dropout rates and even instances of severe consequences like suicide.

The current examination system prioritizes competition over comprehension, fostering a culture of rote learning. The need is for a shift towards assessing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and real-world applications of knowledge rather than mere memorization.

The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes moving away from rote learning towards age-appropriate competencies. Educators must adapt their teaching methods based on the assessment criteria in order to promote meaningful learning experiences.

It is essential to invest in training programs for educators to enhance their pedagogical skills and implement learner-centered approaches effectively. Diverse assessment methods such as portfolios and projects should be incorporated to capture the multifaceted nature of student achievement.

In conclusion, the focus should be on embracing authentic and contextually relevant assessments that reflect real-world challenges. By reevaluating our approach to examinations and assessments, we can pave the way for a more empowering and student-centered educational system.
