Paris Olympics: High Alert for Security Measures

As the Paris Olympics draw near, concerns about security are at the forefront of discussions. With just a month to go until the games kick off, city police chief Laurent Nunez addressed these worries in a press conference.

Nunez emphasized that police forces are on high alert, especially in light of the threat of terrorism. He mentioned concerns about Islamic terrorism, as well as the low-intensity threat posed by radicalized environmentalists, left-wing extremists, and the pro-Palestinian movement.

The recent arrest of two individuals in Saint-Étienne who were plotting an attack targeting the Olympic Games highlights the need for vigilance. In response, plans are in place to deploy around 30,000 police officers daily, with a peak of 45,000 for the opening ceremony on the Seine river. Additionally, the army will provide support, with around 18,000 military personnel involved during the competition.

General Christophe Abad noted that this mobilization of military forces is unprecedented since the end of World War II. Security measures during the opening ceremony will include 35 security boats accompanying the athletes on the Seine, snipers stationed along the route, and the collaboration of the three tactical police forces.

Despite ongoing tensions surrounding snap elections and potential protests, Nunez assured that security plans for the Paris Games remain unchanged. Private security has also been addressed, with an expected 25,000 agents in place, meeting 93% of the needs. However, 400 agents are still needed for the opening ceremony.

Organizers are confident in their ability to meet all security requirements before the start of the Games. With the eyes of the world on Paris, the safety and well-being of all participants and spectators remain a top priority.
