Microsoft Loses 2 Million Patent Lawsuit Over Cortana

In a recent verdict, a federal jury in Delaware has ordered tech giant Microsoft to pay $242 million to patent owner IPA Technologies. The jury found that Microsoft’s Cortana virtual-assistant software infringed on an IPA patent related to computer-communications software.

The dispute stemmed from IPA’s claim that Microsoft’s voice-recognition technology violated its patent rights. IPA, a subsidiary of patent-licensing company Wi-LAN, acquired the patent from SRI International’s Siri Inc., which Apple later integrated into its Siri virtual assistant.

Microsoft has expressed confidence that it never infringed on IPA’s patents and plans to appeal the decision. On the other hand, representatives for IPA and Wi-LAN have not yet responded to the jury’s verdict.

The lawsuit, filed by IPA in 2018, initially accused Microsoft of infringing on multiple patents related to personal digital assistants and voice-based data navigation. However, the case was eventually narrowed down to focus on one specific IPA patent. Microsoft contended that it did not infringe on the patent and argued for its invalidity.

Interestingly, IPA has also initiated legal action against other tech giants like Google and Amazon over its patents. While Amazon successfully defended against IPA’s lawsuit in 2021, the case against Google is still ongoing.

This development sheds light on the complexities of patent disputes in the tech industry, where innovation and intellectual property rights often intersect. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, legal battles over patents are likely to become more common, shaping the competitive landscape of the sector.
