Indian Students Flocking Away from Canada Due to Policy Changes – Enrolment Drop Explained!

In recent times, Indian students’ interest in studying in Canada has seen a decline due to various reasons. The Canadian colleges, which were once at the top of the list for Indian students, are now facing a decrease in enrollment from Indian students. This is mainly due to recent policy changes by the Canadian government, financial burdens, political tensions, and difficulties with work permits.

One of the main reasons for the decline in Indian student enrollment in Canada is the limited study permits and strict eligibility criteria imposed by the Canadian government. In addition, the government has capped the approved study permits to 360,000 for 2024, which is a 35% decrease compared to the previous year. This has made it challenging for Indian students to secure permits for studying in Canada.

Moreover, the cost of studying in Canada has increased significantly, with a 86% decrease in study permits issued to Indian students from October to December 2023. The recent controversy surrounding the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar has also dissuaded many Indian students from applying for study permits in Canada.

Furthermore, the new rule introduced by Canada, limiting off-campus work to a maximum of 24 hours per week starting from September 2024, has added to the challenges faced by international students, including those from India. Additionally, the restriction on open work permits for spouses of master’s and doctoral students has further limited Indian students from pursuing graduate programs in Canada.

In conclusion, the changing policies, financial constraints, and political controversies have posed significant challenges for Indian students seeking to study in Canada. The future of Indian students studying in Canada looks uncertain, as they grapple with increasing travel and tuition costs, in addition to the average requirement of $20,635, which has seen a significant rise from the previous years.
