Elon Musk Launches Starlink in Indonesia

Elon Musk made a special trip to the island of Bali to launch Starlink’s satellite internet service in Indonesia, the fourth most populated country in the world. Musk, wearing a traditional green Batik shirt, was warmly welcomed at a community health clinic in Denpasar, Bali, where he inaugurated the Starlink service alongside Indonesian ministers.

Indonesia, with its vast archipelago of 17,000 islands and a population exceeding 270 million, has been actively seeking partnerships with Musk’s companies for investment in battery technology and fast internet connectivity in remote areas. During the launch event, Musk conducted a speed test of the Starlink service with health workers in Indonesia’s remote regions, highlighting its potential benefits for healthcare and education.

The agreement signed between the Indonesian government and SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company, focuses on enhancing connectivity in the country’s health and education sectors. This aligns with Starlink’s mission to provide affordable high-speed internet access, particularly in underserved and remote areas. Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, emphasized the importance of expanding internet services in remote regions to address challenges in healthcare, education, and maritime sectors.

Communication and Informatics Minister, Budi Arie Setiadi, highlighted the limitations of local internet providers in reaching outer islands due to coverage constraints. Starlink’s low-orbit satellites offer a solution to deliver faster and wider coverage internet services nationwide. Health Minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, emphasized the role of the internet in improving access to healthcare services and real-time communication between health facilities.

Musk’s visit to Bali also includes participation in the 10th World Water Forum, addressing global water and sanitation challenges. This visit follows recent meetings between Indonesian officials and other tech industry leaders, such as Apple CEO Tim Cook and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, signaling Indonesia’s growing attractiveness for tech investments.
