New polling data suggests that Republicans may be on track to gain control of the Senate in the upcoming election. According to a recent New York Times/Sienna poll, GOP challenger Tim Sheehy is leading incumbent Democrat Sen. Jon Tester in Montana by a margin of 52% to 44%. However, the tables are turned in Ohio, where Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown is leading Republican challenger Bernie Moreno by a margin of 50% to 48%. The Cook Political Report has also shifted the Wisconsin Senate race from “lean Democrat” to “toss-up” following recent polling data showing Republican challenger Eric Hovde closing the gap with Democratic incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
These developments come as Senator Joe Manchin’s decision to retire presents a major opportunity for Republicans to gain control of the Senate. With competitive races across the country, the balance of power in the Senate is up for grabs in the upcoming election.
The latest Marquette Law School poll in Wisconsin shows Baldwin leading Hovde by a margin of 51% to 45%. With the survey interviewing 882 registered voters, the margin of error is +/-4.4 percentage points. Despite the current standings, the Fox News Power Rankings had previously rated Wisconsin as “Leans Dem.”
