Shout! Studios has recently announced the upcoming release of a 4K UHD edition of “The Last Unicorn” in a combo pack that includes both a 4K UHD disc and a Blu-ray disc. Set to ship on August 20, this release is highly anticipated by fans of the beloved film.
This new edition will feature a 4K Transfer of the 35mm interpositive, along with Dolby Vision for an enhanced viewing experience. In addition to the main feature, the combo pack will also include a variety of bonus features. The UHD disc will come with an audio commentary, while the Blu-ray disc will feature a Q&A session with writer Peter S. Beagle, animated storyboards, and the original theatrical trailer.
Fans will have the option to purchase a steelbook edition of the release with new artwork exclusively at Wal-Mart. Customers ordering the standard edition directly from Shout! Studios will receive a double-sided poster featuring the steelbook art and the standard edition art, while supplies last.
Peter S. Beagle, the author of the original novel on which the film is based, successfully won a legal battle over the rights to “The Last Unicorn” in 2021.
“The Last Unicorn” is a 1982 animated film produced by Rankin/Bass Productions, adapted from Beagle’s novel of the same name. The animation was done by the Japanese studio Topcraft, known for its collaboration with Hayao Miyazaki on “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.” Some members of the Topcraft team later formed Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki in 1985.
This upcoming release is not the first time “The Last Unicorn” has been made available to fans. Shout! Factory released the film digitally and on home video in 2013, while Lionsgate released a special “25th Anniversary Edition” DVD in 2007 and a Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack in 2011.
Overall, the upcoming 4K UHD edition of “The Last Unicorn” is a treat for both longtime fans and newcomers to the magical world of this beloved animated classic. Get ready to experience the enchanting journey of “The Last Unicorn” like never before when it hits shelves on August 20.
